Capture Studio Privacy Policy
Effective date: October 12, 2026
Capture Studio is a Chrome extension that provides screen recording, webcam recording, and user-initiated meeting-audio transcription. This Privacy Policy explains what information the extension handles, how it is used and stored, and when it may be transmitted to third-party services.
1. Information Handled by the Extension
Depending on the features used, Capture Studio may handle the following information:
- Screen and video content: Screen, browser-tab, and window content selected by the user, along with webcam video when enabled.
- Audio: Microphone input and meeting audio selected by the user for recording or transcription.
- Transcript text: Text returned by the transcription provider selected by the user.
- Provider configuration: User-supplied API keys, provider selections, model names, language preferences, and speaker-label preferences.
- Recording preferences: Settings that control webcam overlay size, position, orientation, borders, background, and other recording options.
Capture Studio does not require users to create an account.
2. How Information Is Used
Capture Studio uses information only to provide its recording and transcription features.
Screen and webcam recording: When the user starts a recording, the extension captures the screen, browser tab, window, webcam, and microphone sources selected by the user. Recordings are processed locally in the browser and made available for the user to download. Capture Studio does not upload these video recordings to a developer-controlled application server.
Meeting-audio transcription: When the user starts meeting transcription, Capture Studio captures meeting audio from the source selected by the user and divides it into non-overlapping five-minute parts.
Each completed audio part is sent directly from the browser to the transcription provider selected by the user. The provider processes the audio and returns transcript text, which Capture Studio displays locally so the user can review, edit, copy, or download it.
Speaker labels, when supported and enabled, are generated by the selected transcription provider. These labels may be anonymous and may not consistently identify the same person across separate audio parts.
Capture Studio does not use recordings or transcripts for advertising or sell them to third parties.
3. Local Storage
Capture Studio stores provider settings and API keys using Chrome extension storage in the user's browser profile.
Recording data and transcript text are held in the extension page's memory while the relevant session is active, unless the user downloads them or the extension's implementation provides another form of storage.
Capture Studio does not operate its own account system or developer-controlled application server for collecting recordings or transcripts.
Users should protect their browser profile and any downloaded recordings, transcripts, and API credentials.
4. Third-Party Services
Depending on the provider selected by the user, meeting audio, transcription requests, and the associated API credential may be transmitted directly from the browser to one of the following services:
- OpenAI
- Deepgram
- AssemblyAI
- OpenRouter
- Google Gemini
These providers process requests under their respective terms of service, privacy policies, and data-retention practices. Their handling of submitted data may vary depending on the provider, account type, model, and applicable settings.
Capture Studio does not control the independent data-handling practices of these providers. Users should review the relevant provider's terms and configure their accounts appropriately before submitting audio for transcription.
Capture Studio does not transmit screen or webcam recordings to these transcription providers as part of its standard recording workflow.
5. Data Sales and Advertising
Capture Studio does not sell personal information.
The extension does not use captured media, transcripts, or API keys for advertising, creditworthiness assessments, or purposes unrelated to providing its recording and transcription functionality.
Capture Studio does not use recordings or transcripts to build advertising profiles.
6. Data Retention and Deletion
Recordings and transcripts remain in the extension page's memory while the page remains active, unless downloaded or otherwise saved by the user. They may be lost when the page is closed or a new capture is started.
Provider settings and API keys remain in Chrome extension storage until the user clears them through Capture Studio settings, removes the extension, or clears its stored data through Chrome.
Files downloaded by the user are stored separately and must be deleted by the user from the relevant location.
Third-party transcription providers may retain audio, transcript text, request metadata, or other submitted information according to their own policies and the user's account configuration. Capture Studio does not control or independently delete data retained by those providers.
7. User Choices and Permissions
Users remain in control of whether and when to use the extension's recording and transcription features.
Users can choose:
- Whether to start, pause, resume, or stop a recording or transcription session.
- Which screen, tab, or window to share.
- Whether to enable the webcam or microphone.
- Whether to submit meeting audio for transcription.
- Which transcription provider and model to use, where supported.
- Whether to enable speaker labels, where supported.
- Whether to download or edit the resulting recordings and transcripts.
- Whether to clear saved provider settings and API keys.
Chrome may request screen-sharing, camera, or microphone permissions when the corresponding functionality is used. Users can manage applicable permissions through Chrome.
The extension uses these capabilities to provide features initiated by the user. It does not intentionally record media through a feature that the user has not started.
8. Recording Consent and Responsibilities
Users are responsible for complying with applicable laws, workplace policies, meeting-platform rules, and consent requirements when recording screens, conversations, or meetings.
Before recording or transcribing a meeting, users should notify other participants and obtain any consent required by applicable law or the relevant organisation's policies.
Capture Studio does not determine whether a particular recording is legally permitted.
9. Security
Capture Studio is designed to process screen and webcam recordings locally and to send transcription requests directly from the browser to the selected provider over HTTPS.
API keys are stored in Chrome extension storage. Users should protect access to their browser profile and avoid sharing their credentials.
No method of electronic storage or transmission is completely secure. Users should revoke and replace any API key they believe has been exposed.
10. Children's Privacy
Capture Studio is not specifically designed for children under the age applicable under relevant privacy laws. The extension does not intentionally collect personal information from children through a developer-operated account or application server.
Users must comply with applicable age restrictions and consent requirements when using the extension.
11. Changes to This Privacy Policy
This Privacy Policy may be updated when Capture Studio's features, third-party integrations, or data-handling practices change.
The effective date at the top of this page will be updated when revisions are published. Users should review this page periodically for changes.
